1. Paint Color Comes Last.

This might seem counterproductive to paint a room after you move in but if you are purchasing new furniture you might end up hurting yourself in the long term. There are SO MANY colors to choose from that you can never really make the right unless everything is in the room. Lighting play a huge role in color choice as well. Chances are what looks good in a windowless powder room won't work in your large open concept kitchen.

2. Let Your Furniture Breath

No one likes an over crowded room. By using correct furniture spacing the flow of the home is just better. Guest feel more relaxed and not cramped.  If you are downsizing you might need to trade in some of our pieces. Think quality of quantity when it comes to investment pieces. You won't want to be replacing a couch or a bed every few years.

3. Soar to New Heights

With your art work that is. This tip is the easiest to accomplish. Most museums and galleries hang their work so that the middle of the piece is 57-60 inches from the floor (57 inches is the average human height in case you didn't know).  If you are working with a larger scale room the same rules apply.

4. Ready for a Magic Carpet Ride?

There are three schools of thought on carpet sizing. The first one is obvi the most expensive. This is where you buy a rug large enough where all of the furniture legs fit on the rug.  Unless you can make it rain on the reg this probs won't work. You can also go the other way and get something where none of the legs are on the rug. If you are going to go with the route the rug still needs to be large enough where the front legs touch the rug. If neither of these tickle your fancy you can find a rug that allows you to place the front legs on it. Pretty much when it comes to rugs do whatever you want.

5. Check Your Line of Sight

The focal point should be clear as soon as you enter the room. Normally they are placed directly across from entrance. You never want too many attention grabbing pieces in a room. Remember less is more.
